The company aims to replace the energy it has used so far from coal-fired power plants with another, more sustainable energy source in the course of its own copper mining activities. The current agreement is planned to save 8 million tonnes of CO2 emissions per year (according to 2019 data, Poland's total CO2 emissions were just over 390 million tonnes).
"KGHM is proud to lead the initiation of a 100% carbon free energy project, delivering on its commitment to lead efforts to decarbonize. The SMR technology will increase the company's cost efficiency and transform the Polish energy sector" – said Marcin Chludziński, President of the Management Board of KGHM Polska Miedź S.A. in the press release.
