According to a quick online poll by Nézőpont Institute, two thirds (65 percent) of the Hungarian population believe that Christian Europe must be preserved while only one fourth (24 percent) thinks that we should tolerate other religious and cultural groups gaining a foothold on our continent.

The most important message of Viktor Orbán’s ceremonial speech on 15 March was to preserve, by all means, the Christian culture of Europe. This statement was met with unanimous support by the pro-ruling party group (83 percent), and there are more, even among the opposition supporters, who agree (48 percent) than those who support multiculturalism (36 percent).

Only one fourth (24 percent) of the Hungarians would prefer liberalism as the most crucial principle of the European Union, twice and a half as many (58 percent) said they would rather opt for Christianity.

The opinion poll also showed that two thirds (65 percent) of the Hungarian people are glad that Polish-Hungarian relations in the last few years have become even better than in previous ones, and this view is supported even by the majority of the opposition. In connection with this, nearly twice as many Hungarians were pleased with the fact that Mateusz Morawiecki, Polish Prime Minister spoke on the ceremonial event on 15 March as those who were not (26 percent).

Methodology

The online opinion poll by Nézőpont Institute on behalf of Magyar Nemzet was carried out on 15 March 2019, by asking 600 people representative of the total adult population in terms of sex, age and education.
