Piotr Naimski states that by 2040-2045, 20 percent of Poland’s energy will come from nuclear plants. The PiS MP states that Poland is currently looking for a lasting partner to help invest in the project.
Naimski told Polskie Radio that the government wants to build six nuclear power reactors in two plants over the next 20 years. “This will be six GW of electric energy and will be about 20 percent of the Polish demand and production of energy in 2040-2045,” he said.
The Minister stated that the first Polish nuclear plant is planned to be constructed by 2033 and will most likely be located on the Baltic Coast.
The MP explained that if Poland wants to maintain its coal-based energy, it must diversify its energy sources with those who do not produce carbon dioxide, and nuclear energy does not. This will also help fulfill the standards enforced in the European Union concerning limiting the emission of carbon dioxide by members states, according to Naimski.
Naimski also announced that the government knows what kind of model of infrastructure it wants and that it is currently looking for a long-term investor. “We are not looking for money to borrow, or financial markets. We are searching for a partner who will invest with us and lead this project together,” he added.
In June 2019 US Secretary of Energy Rick Perry and Minister Piotr Naimski had signed a Memorandum of Understanding concerning cooperation in civil use of nuclear energy during Andrzej Duda’s visit to Washington.
The Polish Energy Policy Project foresees the construction of six nuclear blocks of power of 1-1.5 GW each by 2040. The first is to be finished and launched in 2033 and the rest would follow up till 2043.
