NAC Breda football supporters prepared an extraordinary setting for the 75th anniversary of Breda's liberation. The KNVB Cup game played out on 29 October was exceptional. A massive banner appeared on the stands commemorating the Polish 1st Armoured Division commanded by General Stanisław Maczek. The Dutch club changed the name of its stadium, which from now on will be known as Stanisław Maczek Stadium.
The 1st Armoured Division continued the tradition of the 10th Motorized Cavalry Brigade, which went into battle on 1 September 1939 under the command of Colonel Stanisław Maczek. The unit was the only one to cross the Hungarian border in formation, and its soldiers, facilitated by the friendly attitude of our Brothers, made their way to France where the unit was recreated. After the collapse of the French army the unit was once again re-formed in Great Britain under the command of General Maczek as the 1st Armoured Division. It fought in Normandy, Falaise, took part in the liberation of the Netherlands and it ended the war at the Kriegsmarine naval base in Wilhelmshaven.
Our city was liberated through the efforts of Polish soldiers of the 1st Armoured Division commanded by General Stanisław Maczek. We owe Breda's liberation to their dexterity. We want to pay tribute to Polish heroes, who gave their life for freedom – was the club's special announcement.
– the word "DZIĘKI" [thanks] on the banner was made up of the surnames of 300 soldiers who gave their lives defending our city – write representatives of the ultras (group of supporters responsible for the banner).
